Super Bowl 52: Patriots elect to wear white

New England is sticking to its superstition.

The Patriots have elected to wear their white road jerseys over their blue home uniforms in Super Bowl 52 in Minneapolis against the Eagles, the team announced Tuesday.

Just give them all the props for that, said Torin Dorn, who had 13 points. But we’ve got to be better.

Miami gave 5-foot-7 freshman Chris Lykes his first start with fellow rookie Lonnie Walker IV battling a back problem. Lykes had six points and five assists in 22 minutes.

Larranaga said Walker’s back tightened up so badly Friday night that he couldn’t bend enough to touch his knees, keeping him out of Saturday’s practice and putting his status in question until tipoff. Walker finished with 12 points in 30 minutes.

Miami’s Anthony Lawrence II and Ebuka Izundu each scored 15 points, with Izundu going 7 for 7 off the bench after managing just 12 points and six made baskets in his previous six games combined.

A source told Sporting News that Farwell is interviewing to become the Panthers’ new assistant special teams coach.

Farwell took the same position with Seattle in 2016, one year removed from a four-year stint as a Seahawks special teams captain and backup linebacker.

The Panthers have a vacancy following Chase Blackburn’s promotion to head special teams coach. Blackburn is replacing Thomas McGaughey, whose contract expired. McGaughey has subsequently reached agreement to become the Giants’ new special teams coach.

Farwell carved his NFL niche on special teams after making the Vikings in 2005 as a college free agent from San Diego State. He spent six seasons with the Vikings, earning Pro Bowl honors on special teams in 2009.

Baker Mayfield tries to distance himself from Johnny Manziel comparisons

Lack of height and an inability to keep his emotions in check are two knocks against quarterback Baker Mayfield as the 2018 NFL Draft approaches. At the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., this week, Mayfield did his best to dispel the latter, while Broncos coach Vance Joseph said the former is no great cause for concern, either.

I’ll be honest with you, I think it’s a narrative you guys [in the media] have created,” he said, per the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. We’ll see. I haven’t really met him. I don’t know who he is as a person. I think after I do meet him, I’ll be able to find out what’s deep inside him, and I’ll just see what makes him click. And that’s part of the process.

Meanwhile, Joseph whose Broncos, with the No. 5 overall pick, are another logical landing spot for Mayfield said Mayfield’s height, listed at 6-1, doesn’t worry him.

I think that’s fine, Joseph said, per the Denver Post. You watch Drew Brees play, he’s figured it out. He’s a very successful quarterback. Guys figure it out. Good players figure it out. I wouldn’t be concerned about that.

His most common response in the press conference when asked about his hand was pretty simple: Not talking about it.

Brady reportedly jammed his right (throwing) hand Wednesday in practice when a teammate accidentally ran into him.

When a reporter asked Brady thumbs up or thumbs down for Sunday he said with a smug smile, We’ll see. He did say that he was out there for practice Friday adding it was fun, but he didn’t indicate how much he was able to do in practice.

Brady attended the press conference in throwing gloves, and that of course added more to the storyline. Twice Brady was asked why he was wearing the gloves but all he said was, I’ve worn them before.

The quarterback did elaborate more about what he saw in the Jaguars and what the Patriots will face on Sunday saying the game will be a great challenge.

Saints players troll Vikings after blowout loss in NFC championship game

The Saints were clearly still very bitter about their last-second loss to the Vikings last week. During and after the Eagles’ 38-7 beatdown of the Vikings on Sunday night, Saints players, such as Michael Thomas, got in a few jabs on social media.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is doing right by Tony Romo. The question is what comes next as the NFL’s quarterback-needy teams try to fill that position when the league’s signing window opens at 4 p.m. Thursday.

The Cowboys are expected to release Romo on Thursday, according to a person familiar with the situation, confirming several reports. The Cowboys can designate Romo as a post-June 1 release, enabling them to spread the salary cap hit of the move over two seasons instead of one.

LeBeau had been the Titans defensive coordinator the last three seasons and helped the Titans improve from 20th in total defense in 2016 to 13th in 2017.

If LeBeau does retire, it will end a coaching career that began in 1973 as the Eagles special teams coach. After three seasons in Philadelphia, he joined the Packers staff as a defensive backs coach in 1976.

LeBeau rejoined the Bengals in 1997 as the defensive coordinator on Bruce Coslett’s staff. When Coslett resigned in 2000, LeBeau became the head coach. Though considered one of the best defensive coordinators in NFL history, LeBeau was just 12-33 over two-plus seasons as the Bengals head coach. He was fired following the 2002 season and spent on year as the Bills assistant head coach before returning to Pittsburgh.

NFC championship: Eagles fan takes big hit from train platform pillar

Fresh information emerged Monday: Deadspin reported the incident took place before the game and the fan was trying to pump up the crowd on the train.

We hope this Eagles fan will be ready for Super Bowl 52 in two weeks. We also hope he gets home by then.

The fellow earned himself a bruise when he failed to account for a pillar that stopped him in his . . . well, his tracks as he raced alongside a Philly train Sunday night.

It stings, Keenum said of the loss to Philadelphia. Like I said last night, it’s going to take a while to process. A little more perspective this morning after sleeping on it, not getting much sleep. I watched the film and it still sucks.

The Patriots and Eagles had a combined 10 Pro Bowl players.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who led the NFL with 4,577 passing yards, was replaced by Raiders quarterback Derek Carr as Brady plays in his eighth Super Bowl. Steelers fullback Roosevelt Nix replaces New England’s James Develin on the AFC roster. Colts tight end Jack Doyle will replace Rob Gronkowski. Titans safety Brynden Trawick is replacing Patriots receiver Matthew Slater as the AFC special teams player.

But most people have just been tweeting the still image of an official smiling after a Pats TD, which completely takes the moment out of context. Very few showed the video of what happened with the official and the Patriots to show why he was smiling.
